In Japan the CX500 was sold as the Wing GL500 from December 1977, with the same liquid-cooled 80-degree V-twin, pushrod four-valve heads and shaft drive as the export bike. It was a standard roadster with a single front disc and a rear drum, not the faired tourer that later carried the Silver Wing name. Honda stopped selling the GL500 in Japan in 1981, leaving the 400 to carry on.
